Halliday Wine Companion have just awarded GOLD to our inaugural vintage of our Sweetwater Estate Shiraz Touriga.
Receiving an outstanding 95 points, the 2023 wine has been jubilantly celebrated after challenging vintages in 2021 and 2022.
Toni Paterson, Master of Wine and one of Australia’s leading wine commentators, reviewed the 2023 Shiraz Touriga for Halliday Wine Companion and noted:
“There is a rusticity to this wine, reflective of Touriga Naçional's inherent earthy characters, with a mix of red fruit and meaty aromas, accented by hints of red rose and spice.”
The Portuguese Touriga Naçional varietal is an incredibly perfumed red. The smaller berried vines produce deep violet fruit on the foots of the Sweetwater Ridge.
Perhaps best known for its integrations in producing Port – it is playing a more forward role in table wines these days. The fruit might be small – but its flavour contributions are anything but.
Toni goes on to add:
“The mid-palate is fleshy, with a savoury base and balanced tannins. The flavour is centred on the mid-palate, offering a good mix of bright fruit and savouriness. Decanting is recommended, as it opens beautifully with air.”
On the vintage, Sweetwater Estate Chief Winemaker Bryan Currie said:
“The generally sunny conditions of the summer continued into February which was fortuitous as vintage 2023 was one of the latest for many, many years. Harvest gained momentum after Australia Day and was in full swing in the first week of February. The warm and sunny late summer without any heat waves led to an excellent vintage.”
