Sweetwater Estate Shiraz Touriga 2023
After challenging 2021 and 2022 vintages from La Niña weather patterns and significant flooding in the Hunter Valley in July 2022, which resulted from 300mm of rain in four days, vintage 2023 looked like it was going to be another wet and difficult season.
However, the generally sunny conditions continued into February which was fortuitous as Vintage 2023 was one of the latest for many, many years. Harvest gained momentum after Australia Day and was in full swing in the first week of February. The warm and sunny late summer without any heat waves led to an excellent vintage.

"There is a rusticity to this wine, reflective of touriga nacional's inherent earthy characters, with a mix of red fruit and meaty aromas, accented by hints of red rose and spice. The mid-palate is fleshy, with a savoury base and balanced tannins. The flavour is centred on the mid-palate, offering a good mix of bright fruit and savouriness. Decanting is recommended, as it opens beautifully with air."

"Vibrant kirsch, Ribena and raspberry compote bubbling on the stove. Thyme leaves, rosemary stem and blossoming Grevilla. There is plenty of intensity of fruit here with some
granitic earth and wet potting soil too. It's brooding but then with swirls and whirls of swooning red and black berried aromatics. Tannins maintain good structure with lifted acidity. This will cellar for another 3-5 years but it's hard to imagine you’ll
be able to keep your hands off it that long. There is something here for everyone. A compelling wine that would go down a treat with a swift decant and some paprika spiced potatoes and chorizo."
